When deciding to study a language, there are several factors to consider. For many, it’s a curricular requirement, as is the case with languages learned in school, while for others, it’s a professional necessity or a means of integration. Many people study a language for personal growth or enjoyment, out of an interest in cultural connection, or because of its similarity to their native language or a language they already speak fluently. In this article, I share six good reasons to inspire you to begin your journey in learning Spanish. These reasons take the following elements into account:
1) Global communication: Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world as a native language. It allows you to connect with over 635 million people in more than 21 countries, primarily in Spain and Latin America.
2) Cognitive and personal development: Learning a language stimulates the brain, strengthens neural connections, and improves memory and mental flexibility. It can help prevent or delay age-related cognitive decline.
3) Enriching travel: It improves communication during your travels in Spain and Latin America. It allows for meaningful interactions with locals because speaking the local language lets you meet new people and make friends, making your trip more enjoyable and enriching. From a practical standpoint, it makes ordering food easier since you understand the menu, and it helps you understand signs and navigate emergency situations or everyday life. Additionally, understanding what’s being said around you is key to avoiding scams. It also offers unique moments and experiences, as it grants you access to places and hidden gems that typical tourists—who don’t speak the language—usually don’t get to see.
4) Professional and career opportunities: The demand for bilingual workers has increased, especially in sectors such as business, healthcare, and education. Speaking Spanish enhances your ability to function in international settings.
5) Access to culture: Speaking the local language while traveling transforms the experience by facilitating an authentic connection with the culture, as you’ll better understand traditions, customs, and the way of life by being able to communicate with the locals. It offers the opportunity to explore a vast cultural richness, since Spanish is spoken in more than 21 countries, connecting us not only with Spanish culture but also with Latin American culture, allowing you to discover its treasures in art, literature, film, music, cuisine, and the fascinating remnants of pre-Columbian civilizations such as the Inca, Maya, or Aztec.
6) Helpful for learning other languages: Since Spanish is a Romance language, it makes it easier to learn other languages such as Portuguese, Italian, French, or Romanian. If you already have knowledge of another Romance language, learning Spanish will be very easy for you.
Whatever your motivation, once you begin, you’ll be embraced by its culture, with the joy and friendly warmth of its people, under the blue sky and bright sun that seems to belong to another time.
